 "The history of education for deaf people has, in general, remained an unnoticed subject in historiography. This master thesis gives an overview of the developments of education for the deaf during the Habsburg monarchy of the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1779, the so called ‘k.k. Taubstummeninstitut zu Wien’ (The Imperial and Royal Institute for Deaf and Mutes in Vienna) was founded, thus enabling a process for the expansion of education for the deaf. However, acknowledgement of the possibilities for teaching deaf people was not a product of modern times, but was indeed discussed and practised between the 13th and 17th centuries. This historiographical thesis focuses on the Viennese institute and concentrates on certain aspects in particular: the foundation phase, teaching contents, methods i.e. the use of sign or spoken language as well as the expansion of education for the deaf during the Habsburg monarchy of the 18th and 19th century. During the same period, there was an intention to unify teaching systems for the deaf and mutes, which will be analysed in this thesis too."
