Question 1: Interest? Døvehistorisk Selskab (DK)

Is there a lot of interest in your Museum, is your Museum important? In your city, your region, in your country? Why? Or... why not?

We are the world's oldest deaf history society as founded in 1981. We focus on deaf history for education and social life for deaf people in Denmark.

Question 2: Target Group? Døvehistorisk Selskab (DK)

The target group of your Museum: the Deaf community or also hearing persons? Adults, or also children? 

Can you tell us how many people visit your Museum, on average, Per day, week, or per month?

Target group: all who are interested in deaf history

We have 6 volunteers who work every week (Friday) for the registration of our materials on homepage www.arkiv.dk (that is cooperation for local archives for national small and local archives).
100 people per month visit our collection.

Does your Museum have a website? Do you use Social Media? Do you advertise in other ways? 

What - in your opinion -  is the most effective way to get people to visit your museum?

The location of your Museum. Is it in a building that is owned by you? Rented? Can you use it for free? Is your Museum located at a Deaf school, a Deaf Club or a Deaf Association? If we may ask: what are the costs? 

Our museum is located at the school for the deaf in Copenhagen, which was also started in 1981.

We have 4 rooms (200m2 area) in the school. Rent is free.

Is your museum a commercial enterprise, do you make a profit?

Do you receive funding? From who?

We have 80 members who pay 30 euro/year/member.

The Danish Deaf Association supports us with 3.000-3.500 euro/year.

But we had a project for registration in the years 2017-2021 which was supported with 70.000 euro funding.

Do you have any paid employees? If yes: how many? 

Do you depend on volunteers? How many volunteers work at your Museum?

The people who work at your Museum (as professionals or as volunteers) have they had any special training in Museum Skills, other relevant training? 

We have only 6 volunteers and 5 board members who work for the society.

Do you work together with other Deaf Museums? Or universities, groups or Deaf Archives in Europe?  If you do, who with?
If you don't: would you like to cooperate with other organizations ?

What about the future of your Museum?  What are future risks, future opportunities? 

If the school for the deaf wants to close, we will have a problem with the rooms we use now.

If you could make three wishes for the future of your Museum: or for Deaf Museums in general: what do you wish for?

We wish to have a government that takes responsibility for our archives and items. But they are not interested in this. We’ve had meetings with them many times, over 20 years.

Are there any other things you want to tell Deaf Associations, other organisations or people who want to start a Deaf Museum? Any advice? Things they should - or should not - do?

Always that the government must take responsibility for deaf history. That is part of the country's heritage. Often they are interested in medical hearing developments, but the culture and social life of Deaf people are more interesting!!
